RIM’s BlackBerry continues to grow market share in spite of iPhone’s success. While some say RIM has multiple BlackBerry models competing against a single iPhone model, the BlackBerry Curve outsold the iPhone by itself in the first quarter of 2009.
According to a CNET article, three BlackBerry models are among the top five best-selling U.S. smartphones. The CNET article shows the top five in this order:
- RIM BlackBerry Curve (all 83XX models)
- Apple iPhone 3G (all models)
- RIM BlackBerry Storm
- RIM BlackBerry Pearl (all models, except flip)
- T-Mobile G1
The History Leading to Q1 2009
A recent CNN Money article about smartphone wars included worldwide market share data back to 2006. BlackBerry showed a consistent increase in market share from 7% in 2006 to 20% in Q1 2009. Similarly, iPhone showed a consistent increase from 3% in 2007 to 11% in Q1 2009. While the iPhone matched BlackBerry’s market share growth in some years, it has never exceeded it.
Other Players in the Market
While Nokia’s market share has declined slightly, it is still the clear leader holding 41% of the market.
Windows Mobile has dipped below 10% according to a report by Canalys. It will be interesting to see if Microsoft’s upcoming releases of Window Mobile 6.5 and 7.0 can breathe new life back into the smartphone OS.
